Phenom is a unique office space that encourages delightful conversation and thoughtful contemplation. Inspired by the idea that the working atmosphere should mirror life's enjoyable moments, Zhu Jianhong has created an office that allows its occupants to observe nature's changes, think quietly, and communicate joyfully. The design's unique properties lie in its use of basic materials such as cement, bare plywood, natural wood oil, and wooden planks. This approach has enabled the completion of the 500 square meter office at a minimal cost.
The design's realization technology includes the use of bare plywood, aluminium, natural wood oil, and oak board. To address the challenge of direct solar radiation from the west and maintain natural brightness indoors, the main entrance was moved inwards about 3 meters, and an indoor landscape was placed near the French windows. The design also features a rectangular hollow section connecting the ground floor and the first floor, releasing the stress from the poor storey height and improving aesthetics.
The office area on the second floor retains the original concrete ceiling, with minimal decorations added. The floor is adorned with wooden floorboards, and environmentally friendly plywood is used for space dividers and furniture. All furniture surfaces are treated with natural wax oil. The majority of the furniture, including stainless steel pendant lamps, office desks, meeting tables, and material sample shelves, are designed and handmade by the design team.
The design also addresses the challenge of limited natural light on the east side of the construction. Through careful planning and innovative solutions, the design team has successfully balanced the need for natural light with the need to avoid direct sunlight. The result is a well-lit, comfortable office space that promotes productivity and wellbeing.
Phenom is more than just an office; it's a testament to the power of innovative design in transforming everyday spaces. By rethinking the traditional office, Zhu Jianhong has created a space that not only meets the functional needs of its occupants but also enhances their working experience. The design's success is a reminder of the potential of design to improve our lives, one space at a time.
